Do Mice Chew Through Spray Foam in Pole Barns and Barndominiums?
Mice can chew through spray foam, but they rarely nest in cured closed-cell foam the way they do in bubble wrap, fiberglass or loose insulation. No insulation is fully rodent-proof. Sealing the gaps mice use to get in matters more than the insulation itself.
Why Mice Prefer Other Insulation
Fiberglass and torn bubble wrap are soft and easy to pull into nests. Cured closed-cell foam is rigid, offers no nesting material and is not food, so mice usually move on.
Where Mice Get Into Pole Barns
- Gaps under the base trim and between the panels and the slab
- Around overhead and walk-through door frames
- At the eaves and where panels meet the ridge
- Around pipes, wiring and conduit
How We Reduce Rodent Problems
We remove old, nest-filled insulation, seal gaps at the base trim and doors with foam, and recommend steel mesh or hardware cloth over larger openings. See pole barn spray foam insulation and barndominium spray foam insulation.
In Barndominiums
Because a barndo is a home, keeping mice out matters even more. Closed-cell foam on the shell plus sealed penetrations and door frames gives them very few places to get in or nest.
