Can You Spray Foam Over Old Bubble Wrap or Blanket Insulation in a Pole Barn?
Usually not. Closed-cell spray foam works by bonding directly to the metal, so loose, torn or sagging bubble wrap and old blanket insulation are normally removed first. If the old material is tight to the metal and in good shape, there are some cases where foam can go over it, but that is the exception.
Why Removal Is Usually Needed
- Foam sprayed onto loose material will not bond to the steel
- Gaps between the old insulation and the metal can trap moisture
- Old blanket insulation often hides rodent nests or wet spots
- Torn bubble wrap can pull away later, taking the foam with it
When Foam Can Go Over It
If old faced blanket is tight, dry, undamaged and fully sealed, foam can sometimes be sprayed over the facing to add R-value and air sealing. We decide case by case after looking at it.
What Removal Costs
Removal is quoted per building because it depends on how the old material is attached and how much is there. See pole barn spray foam insulation.
After Removal
With the metal exposed, we check for leaks and rust, then spray closed-cell foam directly to the panels. Read how to stop condensation dripping.
